Chiropractic Proven Superior to Acupuncture for Relief of Chronic Spinal Pain ~ on ChiroZINE

-
Three studies comparing spinal manipulation with acupuncture — a pilot study, then a randomized controlled clinical trial, followed by a one-year follow-up study — demonstrated that chiropractic care was the only “treatment” that provided broad-based long-term benefits. In another study, data collected from 28,807 treatment consultations and 19,722 new patients, reviewed significant predictors for immediate improvement with care. Another new survey reveals that a much higher percentage of chiropractic patients seek more than “musculoskeletal care” than has previously been recognized. A new retrospective analysis of 70,274 member-months in a 7-year period within an IPA, comparing medical management to chiropractic management, demonstrated decreases of 60.2% in-hospital admissions 59.0% less hospital days, 62.0% less outpatient surgeries and procedures, and 85% less pharmaceutical costs when compared with conventional medicine IPA performance. This clearly demonstrates that chiropractic nonsurgical nonpharmaceutical approaches generates reductions in both clinical and cost utilization when compared with PCPs using conventional medicine alone. ChiroZINE is the first chiropractic newspaper on the internet, providing you with news and science reviews.

Participate in Practice Based Research

-
We would like to invite you to participate in Cleveland’s Practice-Based Research (PBR) Program. Our current project’s goal is to assess the effect chiropractic care has on balance, fall risk, and physical function in patients aged 65 and older. The time frame for starting this project is January – February 2009. Read more now and participate!

Chiropractic and Chronic Neck Pain

-
A recent balanced article in the Feb 13, 2008 issue of JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) revealed that between 1997 and 2005, the costs for “standard medical management” of spinal pain syndromes (both neck and back) increased by an inflation-adjusted 65%, while measured outcomes for physical functioning, work or school limitations, and social limitations among adult actually declined! During this same period, there was also an overall increase in the number of individuals who experienced neck or back pain (from 20.7% to 24.7%). Read more now!

Chiropractic and Disc Herniation
-
Is it safe to adjust someone with a disc herniation in the neck or low back? Find out more at the Disc Herniation Page and at the Radiculopathy Pages. They review the safety of chiropractic care, and detail how chiropractic care can reduce pain and inflammation, without the risk of resorting to dangerous medications. The Rand SF-36 is now available for your use in the Outcome Assessment section. The Articles of Interest section of the LINKS has been permanently relocated to ChiroZine. NOTE: Informed Consent involves discussing the Iatrogenic Side Effects of standard medical alternatives to conservative chiropractic care. The LINKS Section can be found on the tan toolbar.
-
Resveratrol and Anti-Aging
-
The new Resveratrol Page as it reviews research demonstrating the health and longevity benefits of this power polyphenol. A small randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial reports that zinc reduces infection rates in seniors. Another recent NIH-funded study found that the estrogenic properties of soy may mimic the neuroprotective benefits of estrogen replacement therapy in reducing the risk of Alzheimer's Disease, without risking the extra incidence of developing breast cancer and certain cardiovascular disorders. You may also want to review the updated Magnesium Page, which details it's impact on Women's Health. The Nutrition section contains non-solicitous articles and research about a wide variety of vitamins, minerals and herbals. Look for the NUTRITION Section in the CAM drop-down.
-
The Vertebral Subluxation Complex
-
The Subluxation is at the core of chiropractic. Enjoy this section (which is still in it's formative stage) and let me know your opinion. The Spinal Anatomy 101 section may also catch your fancy. This page will continue to add opinion and research findings, to help explore the “lesion” that chiropractic care is designed to correct.
-
Facet Joint Inflammation Induces Radiculopathy
-
Japanese orthopedists just demonstrated that mechanically induced facet inflammation leads to nerve root radiculopathy (induced allodynia). This work supports yet another aspect of the Vertebral Subluxation Complex hypothesis. This article can be found in the About Chiropractic Adjusting Page. Another new study reveals that Upper Cervical adjusting lowered blood pressure better than a two-drug combination therapy. There are many other articles like this in the Chiropractic Research Results for a Variety of Conditions Page. You may also enjoy a new section on Chiropractic And Scoliosis in the Research Section. Review this new page devoted to Instrument Adjusting. You might also enjoy the related collection of articles on the chiropractic adjustment. There are new additions to the Problems with Placebos Page. Look for the CHIROPRACTIC RESEARCH Section in the RESEARCH drop-down.
-
The Safety of Chiropractic
-
You may enjoy the new Safety of Chiropractic Page, which contains significant research demonstrating that chiropractic is the safest approach available for the relief of neck pain, back pain, headaches and other “musculo–skeletal” complaints. This new page details that research, and discusses how modern medicine has contributed to the Myth that chiropractic care is dangerous.

Does This Describe Your Child?
-
A new survey among adolescents aged 15-16 years revealed that Almost half of the girls and one third of the boys reported mild neck or occipital pain, or shoulder pain, and 5% of girls and 2% of boys reported severe neck or occipital pain, or shoulder pain during the past 6 months. Review FCER and ICPA's response to the recent biased Pediatrics article that discussed the risks associated with chiropractic adjusting for children without reporting the relative risks of medical procedures for the same conditions, or the the benefits of spinal manipulation for children which have been amply described in the research literature. Another study in Neurology notes that chronic tension-type headache was common in a large nonreferred adolescent sample. Although this article does not discuss care options, conservative chiropractic care is the natural choice. Look for them all in the Articles of Interest Section. Come explore the research supporting chiropractic care for children. Look for the PEDIATRICS Section in the CAM drop-down.
-
Older Patients Seek CAM for Chronic Pain
-
A new study of retirees found that chiropractic is in the top 5 CAM modalities, and that most seek care for releif of arthritis or chronic pain. Another recent interview of ER patients with musculoskeletal complaints finds that a high percentage of them would welcome CAM care, and show willingness to participate in CAM research trials! In another survey about medical students interest toward CAM and 15 CAM modalities, 85% agreed that “knowledge about CAM is important”. The most frequently indicated level of desired training was “sufficient to advise patients about use” and the greatest level of training was wanted for acupuncture, chiropractic, herbal medicine, and nutritional supplements. Enjoy an extensive collection of Alternative Medicine Review articles which discuss alternative approaches to disease management. Look for the ALT-MED ABSTRACTS Section in the CAM drop-down.

Surviving the Scrutiny of File Review
-
Following the release of the Medicare OIG report, insurers are increasingly reviewing claims. Are your records missing or inadequately presenting key elements, like proper evaluation, treatment plans, medical necessity, and/or contraindications to treatment? If that is likely, then read Dr. Schetchikova's article Surviving the Scrutiny. Learn more about what needs to be recorded and tracked within the patient file. Another article by Robert Mootz, D.C. outlines efficient charting methods. Look for them in the ARTICLES section. Find the DOCUMENTATION Section in the TOOLS drop-down.

Are German Orthopedic Surgeons Killing People With Chiropractic?
-
Editorial Commentary: I present for your review an abstract from the Journal of Neurology. This abstract blatantly conceals the facts stated in the body of the paper when it states that “we describe 36 patients with vertebral artery dissections and prior chiropractic neck manipulation”. When I read that sentence, I am led to believe that “real-live chiropractors” (meaning licensed Doctors of Chiropractic, who received their training at a CCE/WCCE accredited school) were the ones to provide the “chiropractic neck manipulation”. Unfortunately, that couldn't be further from the truth! You can review many other articles like this at the Stroke Page.

Rehabilitation Monographs Have Been Upgraded!
-
The Monographs have being updated with “hot links” (a.k.a anchored links) to make it easier to navigate through these remarkable articles. Dr. Richard C Schafer donated this collection of rehabilitation monographs to our profession. You will find them of great value! "RC" was the first chiropractor to be published by a medical publication house (Williams & Wilkins) and he is still our profession's most prolific author. Look for the R.C. SCHAFER Section in the ARCHIVES drop-down.

Who Seeks Acupuncture Care?
-
According to a recent survey of 9408 acupuncture patients in the UK, 74% of patients were female. The most common main complaint reported was musculo-skeletal (38%), followed by psychological (11%), general (9%), neurological (8%) and gynaecological/obstetric (8%), while 5% of patients were seeking treatment for their general well-being. Read about this in the Articles section. Learn more about this ancient healing technique. This section links to acupuncture journals, information websites, and also contains significant research articles. Look for the ACUPUNCTURE Section in the CAM drop-down.

The odds of ever returning to work diminish dramatically after being off the job for more than 6 months. Read this article about a nurse who returns to work after 2 years of full disability, following chiropractic management. Enjoy another study that details the immediate effects of chiropractic on the hearing of 15 subjects with hearing loss. This section will continue to collect all the case studies published in the peer-reviewed literature. Interested in sharing a case study with the profession on our website? Here's an outline for your use. Look for the CASE REPORTS Section in the RESEARCH drop-down.

The Chiropractic Antitrust Suit ~ Wilk, et al vs. the AMA, et al
-
For those who have forgotten, or for those who never knew, organized medicine spent decades and millions of dollars trying to discredit and destroy chiropractic. Today, the vestiges of this suppression are still found on fringe web sites that ignore the body of peer-reviewed research supporting chiropractic care. Explore the depths of medical arrogance in this in-depth review of the Wilk case.
